3 Black Mirror
Proving that Netflix has the market cornered in superior fantasy output this year, Black Mirror’s shunt from UK-only to a UK/US Netflix co-production resulted in a huge upgrade in on-screen production quality. (Which is really saying something, when it was already pretty damn high back in its Channel 4 days.)
The writing, however, stayed at exactly the level we expected: six episodes of riveting drama, some slightly less compelling than others (“Men Against Fire” and “Playtest”) but made up for by the highlights. The feature-length, Charlie Brooker-penned “Hated In The Nation”, which played with social media trolling and killer bees (!), needs to be a series of its own as soon as possible, while the sumptuous “San Junipero” was the best love story of the year by a long way.
Black Mirror isn’t just television: it’s an experience.
