UPDATE 02/02/2019: According to The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez, he tweeted that “there is NO BATMAN BEYOND movie in development!” He said that Warner’s official word is “Not true. We are not working on an animated Batman Beyond movie.” The original article follows below.
Batman Beyond (aka Batman of the Future) was a short-lived series that saw only three seasons and came to an end in 2001. Now it appears that Warner Bros are bringing Terry McGinnis back as news emerges of a new animated feature film based on Batman Beyond.
According to GeeksWorldWide, posts of concept art on DCEUleaks on Reddit suggest that Warner Animation Group and DC Comics are developing an animated Batman Beyond movie to be released in cinemas. The art was posted by users jaceleak74 and kintaro227. One shows Terry McGinnis in everyday wear as well as wearing the Batsuit; another shows Terry standing in front of the superhero suits of the original Batman, Robin, Batgirl and Nightwing in Wayne’s Batcave. The animated feature is believed to be a response to the success of Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which has currently earned over $300 million worldwide.
Also, according to ScreenRant, Will Friedle, the original voice actor for McGinnis in the animated series, has tweeted his interest in reprising the role for the feature. Friedle tweeted, “Uh…for real? I hope I get to play!”
The original animated series was developed by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Alan Burnett. It took place in 2039, as an ageing Bruce Wayne passes the mantle of Batman to high school student Terry McGinnis, after Terry’s father is murdered. Wayne mentors McGinnis as the two bring justice to the futuristic city of Gotham. Since the show’s conclusion, McGinnis has cropped up in the series Justice League Unlimited, as well starring in Darwyn Cooke’s short to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Batman. There has also been the comic book series’, with Batman Beyond Vol.6 Rebirth currently ongoing.
The Batman Beyond feature is expected to go into production in 2020, with a release planned for 2022.
